Student Achievement Gaps

10-27-22 - Statewide testing is inClick here and type "Irvine" to see the results for each school in English Language Arts and Math.  While IUSD's losses were fairly minimal overall, many middle schools experienced 12-13% drops in math achievement compared to 2019, and Woodbridge High School showed a 14% drop in math scores.  The Irvine International Academy charter school surpasses IUSD in math and science!  This is why PARENT CHOICE is so important!

Irvine is known for "high achieving" students due to our highly qualified teachers, active parental involvement, and higher income levels which allow for outside tutoring and academic enrichment.  However, within our community, we have many populations who are struggling.  According to District and state data:

  • 25% of students are not meeting or exceeding English Language Arts (ELA) standards

  • Many student groups have shown "significant gaps" for multiple consecutive years

  • The percentage of students meeting UC/CSU entrance requirements dropped from 78% to 70%

I believe that we can celebrate our successes and achievements, while at the same time acknowledging that many students are in need of help.  The information below is provided to show the academic areas in which Irvine can improve.  To see other areas in need of improvement as perceived by teachers, parents and students, please see the latest Annual Survey results as well as the previous year's survey.

The following tables of information are taken from the California Dashboard.  Due to COVID, the last year published was for 2019.  Note that Students with Disabilities does not include those with more severe cognitive issues who take an Alternate Assessment.   Students with Disabilities includes many different disabilities, with the most common being learning disabilities such as dyslexia.  Dyslexia is a condition , which is characterized by difficulty reading despite having average or above average cognition.

IUSD has identified "significant gap" to mean those groups performing at two tiers below the "all students" subgroup on the Dashboard and at least 5% below the "all students" subgroup on local indicators. The list below identifies sub-groups that have been identified for additional support looking at the 6 state indicators: CA DASHBOARD (2019)* *Senate Bill (SB) 98 and Assembly Bill (AB) 130 suspended the reporting of performance indicators in the Dashboard for 2020-21 and 2021- 22, respectively. Reflections on successes and areas of need will be based on the most recently available state and local data.
